Essay Rubric

For those parents who are wondering how I determine essay grades, I would like to present a copy of my rubric. This is the same rubric that I gave each students to put in his/her writing folder.

STUDY! STUDY! STUDY!

Students should review their notes each afternoon after class. This review does not have to take hours, but should take about 10 minutes. I do encourage students to rewrite their notes if they take sloppy notes. Making flashcards of notes helps as well. I also cannot stress the importance of reading the assignments each night. I try to keep the length of the assignments reasonable (1-20 pages per night). If I must assign a longer reading assignment, I do my best to give the students an extra night.

College Fair: November 9-13

When: November 10 from 5:30 -7:00 p.m.
What: Educational Services Foundation will be at the school to discuss how to fill out forms for grant money for college as well as other forms of financial aid for college.
Where: Houston High School Commons
Who's invited: All parents and students interested in learning how to get college paid for.

When: November 12 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
What: College Fair (several colleges will be present to talk with the students and hand out information).
Where: Houston High School Commons
Who's invited: All parents and students interested in learning about different colleges and programs of study.

How to Make an A in English IV

Parents,
I cannot stress the importance of reading for your student to be successful in this class. English IV is a literature-based class not a grammar class. I will, of course, touch on grammar, but the focus of the class is the literature of Great Britain.

Tests will focus on the literature and essays will be about the literature. Upper-level essays demonstrate that students have, in fact, read the material, paid attention in class, and understand what the literature is about. As you can see, the literature will affect a large portion of the students' overall averages.

If your student's grade falls below your acceptable limit, check to see if he/she is doing the reading. The majority of the homework for this class is reading assignments. If your child does not read the literature, then he/she is most likely going to finish the class with a "D" or possibly a low "C."

Now, I cannot guarentee an "A" if your student does read--that depends on the amount of effort the student puts into the assignment. However, I can guarentee that your student will NOT make an "A" if he/she is not reading.
